Overview

Porsche’s Greatest Le Mans Triumph

Few moments in motorsport history carry the same weight as Porsche’s overall victory at the rain-soaked 1979 24 Hours of Le Mans. Driving the Kremer Racing 935, brothers Bill and Don Whittington, alongside German ace Klaus Ludwig, cemented their place in Porsche lore. Through treacherous rain, mechanical drama, and the grit of endurance, the trio delivered the marque’s first and only overall victory with a rear-engined, 911-derived car.

The drama of the race remains legendary. In the early hours, with Don Whittington at the wheel, a failed fuel-injection belt left the 935 stranded. With nothing more than a wrench, duct tape, and sheer determination, Whittington executed an improbable repair in the darkness and rain—nursing the car back to the pits where it was revived and ultimately returned to the circuit. Hours later, against the odds, the Kremer 935 crossed the finish line as the outright winner, sealing one of Porsche’s greatest triumphs.

A Personal Gift from Ferry Porsche

In the wake of this monumental victory, Ferry Porsche personally invited the Whittington brothers to his home. In recognition of their feat, he offered each brother a new 930 Turbo as a token of gratitude for proving the dominance of Porsche’s rear-engine design on the world’s greatest stage.

The car offered here is the very 930 Turbo delivered to Bill Whittington. A true piece of Porsche history, it represents not only the pinnacle of the 1970s Turbo era but also the tangible reward of Porsche’s only rear-engined overall Le Mans win.

Exceptional Preservation

Showing just 6,000 original miles, Bill Whittington’s 930 Turbo is presented today in outstanding original condition. The exterior retains its factory paint, protected with clear film over vulnerable areas. The interior remains exceptional, free from shrinkage to the leather dash or seats. To ensure mechanical health, over $15,000 has been invested in recent servicing, while the underside was painstakingly cleaned via dry ice.

This extraordinary preservation is matched by its completeness: the car is offered with its books, tools, original brochures, the 1979 Le Mans race program and results, and most impressively, the original race trophy awarded for that unforgettable victory.

A Once-in-a-Lifetime Offering

Very few collector cars can claim originality, ultra-low mileage, and a direct connection to one of the most storied triumphs in endurance racing history. This 1979 Porsche 930 Turbo, gifted personally by Ferry Porsche to a Le Mans–winning driver, is one of those exceedingly rare opportunities—a piece of both Porsche and motorsport history.
