Overview

1940 Indian Four — Ex-Steve McQueen

There are motorcycles that are rare, and then there are motorcycles that carry a story powerful enough to transcend the machine itself. This 1940 Indian Four is one of those exceptional pieces — a beautifully restored, matching-numbers example with provenance to Steve McQueen, one of the most influential automotive and motorcycle enthusiasts of the 20th century.

Steve McQueen’s 1940 Indian Four is now available following a spectacular restoration, presenting a rare opportunity to acquire one of the most significant American motorcycles ever associated with the King of Cool. McQueen was known for his deep love of motorcycles, and this Indian Four was said to have been one of his favorite bikes to ride through the Hollywood Hills surrounding his home.

The motorcycle was originally purchased from McQueen’s estate in 1984 and has since passed through a small number of respected collections. After acquiring the Indian in Europe, we repatriated it back to the United States and immediately commissioned a comprehensive restoration by a noted marque specialist. The result is a motorcycle that honors its history while being fully prepared to be enjoyed today.

Finished in iconic Indian Red with its unmistakable skirted fenders, brown leather saddle, and elegant four-cylinder presence, this Indian Four captures everything that made the model so coveted when new. Powered by its matching-numbers 78ci inline-four engine paired with a three-speed transmission, it remains one of the most refined and collectible American motorcycles of its era.

Indian Fours are exceptionally rare and coveted in their own right, admired for their engineering, elegance, and unmistakable road presence. When you add documented Steve McQueen provenance, long-term ownership history, and a fresh, high-level restoration, the result is something truly one of a kind.

This is not simply a vintage motorcycle. It is a piece of American motorcycling history, Hollywood history, and Steve McQueen history — restored, documented, repatriated, and ready for its next caretaker.
